Webex FAQs

This is my first Webex session, how can I know before the meeting if I can connect?

We strongly recommend conducting a test meeting days before the start of the workshop to make sure you’re ready.

  1. Go to https://www.webex.com/test-meeting.html.
  2. Enter your name and email address, and then click Join.
  3. Click the installer file to install the Cisco Webex Meetings app. Installing the desktop app will give you full features however, if you prefer you can join from your browser.
    • on Windows, click Webex.exe
    • on Mac, click Webex.pkg
  4. Choose how you want to hear everyone in the meeting.
    • “Use computer for audio” is recommended
  5. There is a microphone icon as well as a video icon that can be turned on and off for the test, however during the actual workshop your microphone will be muted and video turned off and managed by the FTA.
  6. Click Join Meeting.
  7. Click OK when the message about the host not being in the meeting appears.
  8. Follow the tips and instructions you see and try the available options.
  9. When you’re finished, click Leave and then select Leave Meeting.

I’m experiencing or seeing one of the following messages:

  • Hanging at “One moment please”
  • Hanging at: Starting Webex
  • Java is not working error
  • Hanging at “Meeting in progress”
  • Unable to start of join a meeting, the meeting client hangs at 10%, 86% or 99%
  • The meeting hangs at 10%, 86% or 99% while trying to start or join a meeting

The join process may hang if the meeting installer is not able to run properly. Try using the Webex Web App.

If you are hanging at the Starting Webex Meetings screen using the Chrome or Firefox browser, you can click on the Join from your browser link:

If you are hanging at the Starting Webex screen using the Edge browser, you can click on the Run a temporary application link:

Temporary File Solution (TFS):

TFS is designed to enable users that are in a locked-down PC (Windows) desktop environment (without administrative rights) to join meetings without having to download and install the Webex Desktop App in their file system. For help, see: WBX25110 – What is the Temporary File Solution (TFS)?

The web browser seems to hang at Setting Up…. window.

Please ensure you have a reliable network connection. We strongly recommend you use Google Chrome to join the webinar as sometimes other web browsers block you from installing WebEx add-ons and/or plug-ins (i.e. Active X). If you do not use Chrome and have difficulty installing or joining:

Windows OS
Join the webinar using ‘Run a temporary application’ (See full instruction HERE)
Mac OS
Go to Safari > Preferences > Advanced and uncheck the ‘Stop plug-ins to save power’ box (See full instruction HERE)

To resolve other start/join issues:

1. Close all open web browsers, open a new browser, and try to start/join the meeting again.

2. If you are still not able to start/join the meeting, clear cache and cookies in your web browser, see:

3. If the options above do not resolve the issue, contact your IT department for further assistance with manually installing the Webex Desktop App.

Cannot hear anything after joining the session.

Look for your name under the Participants (attendees) panel on the right. If the computer/telephone icon is on everyone else’s and none on yours, you have not joined the Audio Conference yet.
There should be a pop-up window that prompts you to join the Audio Conference, when WebEx has loaded and you could have mistakenly closed it. You can still join the Audio Conference. From the top menu, click Communicate > Integrated Voice Conference > Join Conference.

Next, test the speakers for the Audio Conference to ensure you’ve chosen the right speaker. From the top menu, click Communicate > Speaker/Microphone Audio Test.
The test box will appear. Choose the speaker from the dropdown list and hit Test button. If you hear the test music and see the blue bar move in time with the music, hit OK – your audio is now connected.
